In 2017, Terrapin Geothermics Inc. was contracted to a geothermal resource evaluation of select Northern Alberta Communities. The newly released report summarizes the results and lists the communities that would benefit from geo-exchange, direct heat use, and/or electricity generation. The full report can be viewed here.
Nov 2019 - Canadian Geothermal Students Day
The Canadian Geothermal Students Day is organized by students, for students. This meeting is the first of its kind to be organized in Canada. It aims to bring together graduate students to post-doc fellows from Canada’s East to West coasts to discuss and share their research projects related with the field of geothermal energy.

Geothermal Canada Becomes Partner of Global Geothermal Alliance
Geothermal Canada is very happy to announce the partnership with the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA). The GGA is a platform of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) that serves to encourage dialogue and knowledge sharing to globally increase geothermal production. Geothermal Canada is looking forward to partnering with an organization that shares the goal of supporting geothermal energy development.
IGA News: Beyond Electricity - Geothermal Energy Development is Picking Up

There currently is ongoing and planned development of about 15,000 MW in power generation capacity, which would more than double the current installed capacity. Estimating development over the next 5 year period, the International Geothermal Association (IGA) expects development of around 4,100 MW in capacity, picking up pace compared to the 4,341 MW added in the time period of 2008 to 2018. Key growth markets are Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.

Opinion: Canada No Longer Supporting Coal Exports
Canada will no longer support coal exports, as outlined in this article by the National Post. However, it appears that the amount of electricity generated worldwide by coal will rise substantially in the next couple of decades, by about a third. Given these realities, Canada should also actively support activities that reduce the environmental impact of coal use…

Last month, one of our board members, Jeff Witter, co-published a paper in Geothermics titled Uncertainty and risk evaluation during the exploration stage of geothermal development: A review. He will be presenting this topic at the Stanford Geothermal Workshop, being held Feb. 11-13, 2019.
IUGG 2019 - Geothermal Symposium
The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) General Assembly will take place July 8-18, 2019 in Montreal.
Geothermal Canada would like to bring to your attention the symposium “FROM HIGH TO LOW-ENTHALPY: GEOTHERMAL ENERGY AT WORK” convened by Daniele Pinti (Canada) and co-convened by Clara Castro (USA), Paul Baudron (Canada), and Jasmin Raymond (Canada).

Geothermal energy is considered a renewable form of energy that can partially fill the increasing human demand. Yet only a few countries, located in high heat flow regions of the Earth can benefit from high-enthalpy resources to produce electricity. However, low to very low enthalpy geothermal resources are increasingly in demand, especially in cold northern countries such as Canada, Norway etc. Here, heat extracted from groundwater can be sufficient for domestic heating/cooling uses, particularly in remote areas. This symposium will be devoted to all aspects of geothermal energy, from exploration to exploitation and tools (geophysics, geochemistry, geology etc.) needed to evaluate the extent of this resource.
