Strong Interest in Manitoba's Clean Energy Transition: Moyes

The Manitoba government is celebrating major milestones in its Affordable Energy Plan, with hundreds of homeowners making the shift to energy-efficient heat pumps, thousands of new electric vehicles on the road and more wind generation on the horizon, Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes announced today.

“As of August, nearly 500 households have either installed or are in the process of installing ground-source heat pumps and this strong uptake is a sign of growing momentum in Manitoba’s clean energy transition. This level of participation shows that Manitobans are ready to embrace affordable, climate-friendly solutions. Heat pumps are not only better for the environment – they’re better for household budgets.”
— Mike Moyes, Environment and Climate Change Minister

The program is a cornerstone of the province’s broader Affordable Energy Plan. It supports the installation of ground-source heat pumps, which use up to 60 per cent less electricity than traditional electric furnaces. For families with older systems, this can mean annual savings of $300 to $1,000.

Delivered by Efficiency Manitoba, the program offers some of the most generous financial support in the province’s history, the minister noted. It is designed to lower household energy costs for electrically heated homes to reduce electricity demand. It also creates clean energy jobs across Manitoba.

With the recent launch of Canada’s Green Homes Affordability Program in Manitoba, some households will now pay no cost at all to install heat pumps, the minister noted. The minister also highlighted the role of Indigenous leadership in the program’s success, citing recent training initiatives in Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, where community members will install 100 geothermal systems locally.

With an initial goal to support 5,000 families, the program is well on its way to transforming how Manitobans heat and cool their homes, while contributing to the Manitoba government’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the minister added.

This commitment is bolstered by even more momentum in implementing Manitoba’s Affordable Energy Plan.

The Manitoba government has followed through on launching a government-to-government partnership in wind generation including the development of the Manitoba Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program. Manitoba Hydro received a strong response to create 600 megawatts of clean wind energy to power Manitoba homes and businesses, on track to have shovels in the ground by 2027.

More than 4,000 rebates have been issued to support Manitoba families in purchasing an electric vehicle through the Manitoba Electric Vehicle Rebate Program. This has helped reduce emissions and made climate-friendly choices more affordable for Manitobans, the minister noted.

The minister added Manitoba’s Affordable Energy Plan is building the next generation of clean energy, keeping life affordable and supporting the path to net zero emissions by 2050.
