On September 9, 2025, at the Geothermal Accelerator Conference at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, nearly two dozen organizations released a declaration of intent to establish a Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition.
Declaration of Intent
We, the undersigned organizations—founding members of the Canadian Deep Geothermal Coalition—affirm our shared commitment to work together on the development of a Deep Geothermal Roadmap to build a thriving geothermal energy sector and establish Canada as a global leader in next-generation geothermal technologies.
Now more than ever, Canada needs new industries and technologies to catalyze productivity and prosperity. Geothermal energy is one of Canada’s greatest untapped opportunities.
By leveraging this abundant source of reliable clean energy, assisted by our world-class oil and gas drilling expertise and a growing network of geothermal proponents, Canada can become a global leader in next-generation clean heat and power. Realizing this opportunity requires vision, collaboration, and a comprehensive plan.
Together, we will:
Mobilize expertise across sectors to build a world-class, Canadian headquartered geothermal value chain.
Build the case for geothermal energy in Canada by quantifying and publicizing the benefits related to job creation, export revenue, reduced emissions, grid resilience, energy diversification, and security.
Identify the policies, financing tools, and frameworks needed to reduce risk and accelerate deployment.
Advance a research-and-innovation agenda through test centres that keep Canada at the leading edge of geothermal technologies.
Engage Indigenous communities as rights holders, owners, and decision makers, to help shape Canada’s geothermal future.
Uphold high standards for environmental stewardship and risk management.
Our shared goal is to release a draft of the Deep Geothermal Roadmap in 2026 at the World Geothermal Congress in Calgary. This Roadmap will chart the steps needed for Canada to provide global leadership in geothermal energy and contribute to a stronger, cleaner, and more productive economy. It will also follow the calls outlined in the Indigenous Geothermal Peoples’ Declaration, ensuring that Indigenous perspectives and priorities are foundational to Canada’s geothermal future.
In the coming days and weeks, we will be reaching out to build on this initial coalition. We invite governments, Indigenous communities, energy utilities, project proponents, technology developers, researchers, and civil society to join us in this ongoing effort. Participation is open, and we welcome new collaborators at any time. By working together, Canada can take a bold step toward a new era of industrial leadership and energy innovation.
