Five New Projects Approved Through Green Transition Fund

Through the Green Transition Fund, the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, today announced over $3.8 million to support five green projects throughout the province.

Through the expression of interest process, five new projects have been approved for funding. These include:

  • NunatuKavut Community Council Inc – $157,500

    • NunatuKavut Community Council
      The NunatuKavut Community Council, a not-for-profit organization, is receiving $157,500 to explore the feasibility of greenhouse agriculture supported by geothermal energy. This will help to improve food security in the NunatuKavut diesel-dependent communities of Cartwright and Port Hope Simpson. Geothermal energy extracted from internal planetary heat is a low-carbon form of energy-on-demand. The environmental benefits of a positive geothermal analysis versus diesel generated electricity supplied greenhouses are the impact on climate mitigation, improved air quality and lower risk of diesel spills.

  • Nunatsiavut Government – $3,000,000

    • Nunatsiavut Government
      To support a proposed microgrid project in Nain, Labrador, the Nunatsiavut Government is receiving $3 million. Through engagement with the Nain Inuit Community Government, this project is intended to provide a sustainable and renewal energy source for coastal communities of Nunatsiavut. The project will consist of two wind turbines, a battery energy storage system and micro-grid controller with capacity to produce up to three megawatts of clean renewable energy. It is anticipated to displace approximately 1.3 – 1.6 million litres of fuel annually which will assist to reduce environmental risks including transportation risk, home heating challenges and greenhouse emissions.

The Green Transition Fund aims to propel the development of environmentally sustainable business practices and clean technologies in the province and position Newfoundland and Labrador as a leader in the global green transition. This fund supports the greening of commercial operations, research and development, manufacturing and extractive resource development, and other areas that help transition to a greener economy.

There has been significant interest shown for the Provincial Government’s Green Transition Fund with over $8.3 million in funding approved. To date, throughout the province there have been 32 projects approved and 22 are currently under assessment by the department. This funding has leveraged significant investment from the Federal Government and private sources.
