Acho Dene Koe Geothermal Project: Advancing Exploration with Community

September 30, 2025

Fort Liard, BC | August 25–30, 2025

In August, members of the Barkley Project Group geothermal team joined the Acho Dene Koe First Nation in Fort Liard to advance the community’s geothermal project, an initiative designed to bring sustainable, local, clean energy to the region.

Over the course of the week, the project team worked alongside community members to stake claims, marking a significant milestone in securing the necessary rights for ongoing geothermal exploration and future development. This crucial first step represents significant progress toward harnessing geothermal energy as a long-term, renewable power source for Fort Liard.

Beyond the technical work, the visit emphasized the importance of relationship-building and community engagement. The team hosted an Elders’ lunch and an evening community engagement session that concluded with a drum dance, creating space for open dialogue, cultural sharing, and collective visioning.

A highlight of the week was a session with Kevin from NorthStar Agriculture, who shared updates on the greenhouse component of the project and facilitated discussions on local food security and sustainable agriculture. The conversations sparked enthusiasm and valuable input from community members about opportunities for increased self-sufficiency and local food production.
