Over the last few years, a number of start-ups in the geothermal space have gained traction, such as Eavor Technologies, Fervo Energy, Sage Geoystems, and GreenFire Energy. While their technologies and approaches differ, all are trying to figure out how to access the “heat beneath our feet” in geographies that have traditionally been considered too difficult to reach.
Construction to Commence on the First Co-Produced Geothermal Power Project in Alberta and Canada
FutEra Power Corp. (“FutEra”), a subsidiary of Razor Energy Corp. (“Razor” or the “Company”) (TSXV: RZE) which is a publicly traded Alberta-based junior oil and gas company, is pleased to announce it is entering the project execution stage of its co-produced Geothermal Power Project in Swan Hills, Alberta (the “Project”).
Report Urges Alberta To Remove Regulatory Roadblocks for Inactive Well Site Repurposing
The Energy Futures Lab and Canada West Foundation recently released a joint report, titled “The LEAD Project: Leveraging our Energy Assets for Diversification”.
“The proposed bill is intended to signal that the Alberta government prefers redevelopment of disturbed land over greenfield development, that energy entrepreneurship is welcome and that regulators can and should cooperate, coordinate and innovate in this space. Repurposing wells for new energy lives will create jobs, help diversify the energy sector, create new economic opportunities for landowners and ease taxpayer burden around site liability, the report says.”
Alberta No. 1 Geothermal Project Signs MOU with Annelida to Explore Sustainable Agricultural Opportunities
No. 1 Geothermal LP (Alberta No. 1) and Annelida Casting Innovation (Annelida) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to investigate providing geothermal heat to an industrial vermicomposting facility development. This geothermal direct heat use collaboration is the start of developing a sustainable agricultural cluster in the heart of Alberta’s industrial gateway to the North, the Municipal District of Greenview.

The Hitch - Interview with Alberta No. 1 Geothermal Energy Project CEO Dr. Catherine Hickson
On April 8, 2021, The Hitch released an article outlining the Alberta No. 1 geothermal project featuring an interview with CEO Dr. Catherine Hickson.
“Alberta is known for its natural resources such as oil and gas, but could soon be known for a different resource, geothermal energy. Edmonton-based Terrapin Geothermics, a company specializing in generating clean, baseload electricity and heat from industrial waste heat and geothermal resources, is busy testing Alberta’s geothermal capability by developing and managing the province’s first large-scale conventional geothermal energy facility, Alberta No. 1.”
2021 Geothermal Rising Student Scholarships
Geothermal Rising (GR) is pleased to announce the availability of the 2021 GR Scholarship Awards.
To qualify for any of these awards a student must be a GR member (student memberships are only $20 per year). Selection of recipients will be based upon a variety of factors, including the individual’s academic record, student activities, geothermal industry experience, and career goals.
IRENA report now available: "Integrating low-temperature renewables in district energy systems: Guidelines for policy makers”.
This report is now published and can be accessed on the IRENA website. It was developed in collaboration with Aalborg University and with the support of an Advisory Group of District Heating and Cooling Experts, drawn from the constituency of the GGA and other institutions. It provides guidelines to policy makers at the national and local level, urban planners, district heating and cooling utilities, etc. on the options and available tools for facilitating the integration of low temperature renewable energy resources, including geothermal energy, into new and existing district heating and cooling networks and buildings.
The key topics addressed in the report include strategic planning for heating and cooling; technical challenges and solutions on the integration of renewables into existing or new buildings and networks; and enabling regulatory conditions, business models, and financing.
GreenFire Energy Inc. and Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd. Enter Agreement to Perform a Technoeconomic Assessment of a Geothermal Resource
SAN FRANCISCO, California – April 6, 2021 – US-based GreenFire Energy Inc. and Japanese Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd. (MOECO) today announced that they have entered an agreement for GreenFire Energy to design and assist MOECO in performing a demonstration and testing of one of GreenFire Energy’s closed-loop geothermal solutions at a geothermal resource in Japan. The goals are to demonstrate substantial heat recovery from an exploratory well which has already been drilled but cannot be produced by conventional geothermal technology and to assess the technoeconomic feasibility of developing the resource with new technology to create a large-scale geothermal power production facility. MOECO is an oil and gas exploration, development, and production company that is part of the Mitsui Group. The company has been focused on geothermal energy as an important potential source of renewable energy in Japan and other areas.
