Webinar: Find the best drilling target using Leapfrog Geothermal

Find the best drilling target using Leapfrog Geothermal

January 13, 2021

11:00am - 12:00pm PST

Join this webinar to learn how to take advantage of the advanced features of Leapfrog Geothermal and Edge (our add on geostatistical module) and determine the best drilling target for your next deep geothermal well. This presentation introduces a new and modern workflow for 3D data integration using a Play Fairway Analysis approach, using various sub-surface datasets from geology to geophysics and well data. You’ll learn how to combine them into a single calculated model that highlights the most promising areas for drilling.

Presenter Information

Bastien Poux is the Technical Sales Advisor in the Americas for the Leapfrog Geothermal software by Seequent. Bastien holds a MSc in Geology and has published a number of peer-reviewed technical papers on geothermal energy projects. He is geologist with 10 years of experience in geothermal resource exploration, evaluation and development, wellsite geology and 3-D modelling.

What On Earth with Laura Lynch - Geothermal Episode

On Nov. 29, 2020, CBC Listen’s “What On Earth with Laura Lynch” released the episode titled “Mining for heat - can geothermal be part of Canada’s energy future?”

This episode discusses the geothermal potential in Canada, possibility of utilizing petroleum wells for geothermal development, petroleum industry job transferability, as well as three ongoing geothermal projects in Canada. Laura interviews Geothermal Canada President, Steve Grasby, about Geoscience BC’s Garibaldi Geothermal Volcanic Belt Assessment Project, Geothermal Canada Director of Western Canada, Kirsten Marcia, about Saskatchewan’s DEEP project, Fort Nelson First Nation Chief Councillor, Sharleen Gale, about the Clarke Lake Geothermal Project in northeast BC, and Ralph Ross about the Springhill Coal Mine in Nova Scotia, which has been converted to a geothermal system.

In September 2021, the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS), in collaboration with the Canadian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH-CNC), will host their annual meeting, GeoNiagara 2021, the 74th Canadian Geotechnical Conference and the 14th Joint CGS/IAH-CNC Groundwater Conference.

The theme for GeoNiagara 2021 is Creating a Sustainable and Smart Future. The conference will feature technical sessions on subjects of broad interest in the geotechnical and hydrogeological fields. In addition to the technical program and plenary sessions, the conference will include a complement of distinguished keynote speakers, high calibre short courses, technical tours, and social events.

Geothermal geomechanics involving coupled heat flux, fluid flow and mechanical behavior is becoming of greater interest, and you are encouraged to submit a “Geothermal” Abstract by Jan. 31 2021.

Recording Available: University of Illinois Low Temperature Geothermal Workshop

On Nov. 5, 2020, the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) in collaboration with F&S and the Illinois Water Resources Center (IWRC) held a low temperature geothermal workshop. This workshop brought together scientists, engineers, practitioners, decision makers, and stakeholders involved in low-temperature geothermal energy studies, developments, and policy-making. A group of 14 experts from U of I and national and international organizations presented on innovative research undertaken for low-temperature geothermal exchange, direct use heating and cooling, and underground thermal energy storage.

The recording of the first portion of the workshop is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TvptzDctmw&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=UofIFS

The abstracts for all the presentations are available on the Illinois Geothermal Coalition website: https://geothermal.illinois.edu/2020/10/24/geothermal-workshop/

First Nations Major Projects Coalition Will Provide Capacity Support to Clarke Lake Geothermal Project

On Nov. 23, 2020 the Board of the First Nations Major Projects Coalition (FNMPC) announced today that it will provide capacity support to the Clarke Lake Geothermal Project as requested by Fort Nelson First Nation (FNFN).

The project involves taking hot water from depth at a former natural gas well and bringing it to the surface to generate clean electricity. The project will produce between 7-15 MW of clean sustainable electricity on a year-round basis. That is enough to supply between 5000 and 11000 homes. And, with no CO2 emissions, the project will help the BC Government achieve its Clean Energy and Climate Change targets.

DEEP Announces Positive Flow Test Results, Tom Kishchuk Appointed COO

Following the announcement that results from the spring/summer flow testing program exceeded expectations, DEEP Earth Energy Production Corp. (the “Corporation” or “DEEP”) has more positive results.

On Nov. 26, 2020 DEEP announced the results of the Border-5HZ horizontal well. This is the deepest horizontal well in Saskatchewan’s history and the first 90° horizontal fluid production well in the world to be drilled and hydraulically stimulated for geothermal power generation purpose.

Alberta Government Announces Up To $280 Million for Emissions Reductions Alberta Programs

On November 2, 2020, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Minister of Environment and Parks, Jason Nixon, announced a commitment of up to $280 million to fund three Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) programs. The goal of the funding is to support innovative projects for small, medium, and large industries across all sectors in Alberta, while supporting around 5000 jobs and cutting an estimated 13 millions tonnes of emissions by 2030.

The funding will come from the TIER system (up to $180 million) and LCELF (up to $100 million). The three programs include the Shovel-Ready Challenge, Energy Savings for Business Program, and the Partnership Intake Program.
