GreenFire Energy Inc. Completes the World’s First Field-Scale Demonstration of Closed-Loop Geothermal Energy and the Final Report to the California Energy Commission

GreenFire Energy Inc. today announced the completion of the world’s first field-scale demonstration of closed-loop geothermal energy production. The demonstration was performed using an inactive well at the Coso geothermal field in Coso, California, USA. A $1.48 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) and cash contributions from other funders financed the demonstration. GreenFire Energy’s comprehensive final report to the CEC, Closed-Loop Geothermal Demonstration Project, is now available to the public.

Putting Rigs Back to Work: Article from The Hitch

The Geothermal Collaboration Network is a group formed by industry partners with the goal of putting oil and gas workers back to work within the geothermal industry. The Hitch’s article “Putting Rigs Back to Work” describes how this can be done.

According to Dr. Catherine Hickson of Geothermal Canada, Alberta has significant areas where temperatures are high enough to extract heat for direct-use applications and, in some locations, power production. Hickson said direct-use geothermal applications could include space heating, heating a green house, or providing the energy needed for industrial processes. The main difference between an oil well and a geothermal well, is that a geothermal well has a much larger diameter than a typical oil or gas well, said Hickson. The large diameter is required to accommodate the large electrical submersible pumps required to lift the large quantities to hot brine to the surface. A geothermal well is also constructed to last decades.

New Publication: Early-stage exploration for geothermal energy resources along the Denali fault near Duke River, Yukon

A new publication was just made public by the Yukon Geological Survey, titled: Early-stage exploration for geothermal energy resources along the Denali fault near Duke River, Yukon. In collaboration with the Yukon Geological Survey, Innovate Geothermal Ltd. performed a multi-component geoscientific investigation in southwestern Yukon to initiate the search for subsurface geothermal energy resources that could be used for direct use applications and, possibly, the generation of electricity.

Geothermal Canada Annual General Meeting - June 24, 2020

Geothermal Canada will be hosting their 2020 Annual General Meeting on June 24, 2020 at 10:30am MT. Invitees are Geothermal Canada members in good standing eligible to vote. A member is not in good standing if their membership payment is over 6 months due. For the past 2 years, Geothermal Canada AGMs have coincided with major Canadian conferences to increase the number of attendees who can attend in person. This year, the AGM will be held electronically over Zoom. Members in good standing will receive a link.

PEIA Energy Breakfast Webinar: Geothermal Energy- Opportunities in BC

The Pacific Energy Innovation Association (PEIA) is an independent, non-profit association of energy professionals incorporated under the Society Act of British Columbia. Its mission is to initiate and promote discussion and action for energy innovation, efficiency and sustainability. They will be hosting a geothermal talk on June 2 through Zoom. The presenter is Geothermal Canada president Dr. Catherine Hickson.

Project Update: Garibaldi Geothermal Volcanic Belt Assessment

The Garibaldi Geothermal Volcanic Belt Assessment Project is an “ongoing project is assessing the geothermal potential of the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt in BC’s Southwest Region, building on research stretching back to the mid-1970s. The multi-partner collaborative project is using modern geophysical and geological techniques and concepts.” This involves researchers from the Geological Survey of Canada plus 7 Universities (UBC, SFU, DC, UofA, UofC, ETH, Quest). The data collection from summer 2019 included 34 people in the field (375 person days).

On May 7, 2020, Geoscience BC hosted an online Open House meeting to discuss the details and results of the 2019 field work with presentations from Dr. Steve Grasby and Geoscience BC President Carlos Salas. Both presentations and a recording of the meeting are available on the project website.

Geothermal Potential Research at Mount Meager - Online Open House

Vancouver, BC - April 23, 2020 - Geoscience BC and the Geological Survey of Canada are hosting a free online open house to discuss new research assessing potential for geothermal energy generation at Mount Meager, near Pemberton, British Columbia.

The online open house will present and discuss findings presented in a new report due to be published in late April 2020 on 2019 fieldwork that is part of the multi-year Garibaldi Geothermal Volcanic Belt Assessment Project. It will be led by project lead and Geological Survey of Canada Research Scientist Steve Grasby and Geoscience BC Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer Carlos Salas. Researchers involved in the project from six different universities will also be on hand to answer specific questions.
